Computer Arts Magazine / Parade Design

Computer Arts were looking for unique and inspiring workspaces that could be featured in their culture feature: “My Design Space” within their magazine. They came across the Parade Studio on Twitter they felt it fitted the brief perfectly.

The outline was to pick 5 items of interest within their working space and explain their significance. With a multitude of wonderful design lead items and collectables on display to photograph, this assignment was a joy to be involved in. Click on the link below to see the full article and photographs.

Parades’ design studio has a wonderful space with some eclectic items that really was a pleasure to photograph. As a designer and collector myself, It was great to see the wonderful and inspiring items Claire has collected over the years which fit perfectly into her Newport based creative design studio.

Claire’s passion for Diet Coke is well known as she will admit, here we photographed some cans displayed with memorabilia, namely the collectors edition Diet Coke Majorette Barbie Doll. This certainly looks right at home within the Parade Design studio.

Monmouthshire County Life Magazine - Emilie

Being able to capture images in one of my favourite home and interior design stores at the time “Homes of Elegance” in Abergavenny was a great experience, paired with the professional modelling of Miss Monmouthshire at the time - Emilie Parry-Williams, combined to create some great photographs.

Go and check out Emilie on her website, she is an extremely talented Award Winning Welsh Classical Soprano…

www.emilieparrywilliams.com

I’ve been lucky enough to capture the editorial and event photography for Monmouthshire County Magazine almost exclusively for over 7 years. Within this time I was able to photograph a wide range of subjects, meet some extremely interesting, diverse and talented individuals and also attend some fantastic events.

No edition of the magazine would be the same, so one week may involve me visiting a wood worker, or ceramic artist, or alternatively capturing celebrities at the All Star Cup or Michelin Star chefs at work.

I have included a range of photoshoots from my time working on this fascinating magazine throughout my work commission page.

Enjoy…

Hub xv

Turning sports clubs into work hubs… What a great business premise.

I had the pleasure of capturing some corporate images for Hub xv within their Cardiff base at Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground. Capturing the fantastic workspace with it’s unique setting and great views it makes for a unique and wonderous place to hold meetings and work remotely when required.

Hub XV is the brainchild of founder Alix Popham and partners with sports venues to create unique community workspace environments by utilising unused space and creating networking opportunities through events and a business community. Hub members enjoy a professional working environment alongside the opportunity to make high-calibre connections. The co-working concept is growing rapidly across the globe, mostly in main cities and business hubs. Hub XV differentiates itself by providing atmospheric venues where the emphasis is on collaboration through  community, schedule of events, and regular seminars.

Hub XV’s idea of turning sports clubs into business hubs was brought to life by CEO and founder Alix Popham who played 33 times for Wales, appeared in two Rugby World Cups and helped his country win the 6 Nations Grand Slam.

Go and check out Hub xv here and also follow them on instagram.

You would also recognise Alix Popham as a former Welsh International rugby player with 33 caps for his country, playing in two world cups in 2003 and 2007, and was a Grand Slam winner in 2008. He played as number eight or flanker. Born in Newport, he began his career with Newport RFC in 1998, before moving to Leeds Tykes in 2002. He spent three years in England before returning to Wales with the Llanelli Scarlets in 2005.

Icon Creative Design

I’ve been working with Icon Creative Design as a graphic designer for over 10 years, and within that time I have been able to use my photography skills to capture photos of the studio space, detail shots, product photography of design commissions as well as portraiture and staff photo’s.

It’s a wonderful, unique studio space to work in that provides some really interesting items and backdrops as these photos portray. These capture the attention to detail and work ethic that Icon promotes as a design agency as well as the sense of humour and fun element that we apply to our work.

Go and check out their impressive portfolio of work here… and give them a follow on Instagram.

Chock Shop - Brownies

Freshly baked, sensational handmade brownies with a ladle-load of hot chocolate sauce and fresh cream. What’s there not to love about this project already? You’ll find Chock Shop in markets, shopping outlets and food & music festivals up and down the country. And scrap the flowers – they’ve even got a mail order service so you can have your brownies delivered to your door the very next day.

I was commissioned by Parade Design to capture a range of photography that would showcase the quality and variety of the products and all the care and attention that is put into the brand that would also compliment the cool, rustic look that Chock Shop embraces.

The brand is identified through its personality and spirit, embracing the opportunity to stand out through humour and emotional connection, where customers can enjoy being entertained instead of pitched at.

Bellavia & Associates Solicitors

I was commissioned by renowned lawyer Zep Bellavia to capture some new photography of his staff members for an upcoming website design, - to be designed and built by myself. ( Yes I also design and build websites - more on that will be featured in an upcoming blog post, so take a look at that soon).

With a great location in which to shoot, the formal and slightly dark, monochrome look to the images was a deliberate decision which will ultimately compliment but also contrast with the strong brand colour that will feature strongly throughout the website.

It was a pleasure to photograph Zep and his team, and I look forward to collaborating with them further in the future.

South Wales Industrial Controls two day event to showcase uk and world industry excellence.

I was commissioned by IAC Ltd to capture their two day open day event in 2018, after capturing the same prestigious event on previous years.

The event focusses on top users and suppliers of industrial controls equipment converging on Industrial Automation and Control (IAC) works in Newport.

Included among the big hitters that attended and exhibiting at the IAC Ltd.) Open Days were Siemens, ABB, IFM Electronic, Pilz, Eldon, Sick (UK), Wittenstein, Mersen, Cembre, Parmley Graham and Underwoods.

Customers at previous events have included Tata Steel, Welsh Water, Eastman, Evoqua Water Technologies, Mabey Bridge, Catalent Pharma Solutions and Siemens Metals Technologies.

This free to attend event, was held at IAC’s headquarters in Queensway Meadows, Newport.

The supplier’s exhibition featured more than thirty displays of equipment including variable speed drives, motors, sensors, programmable controllers, communications, motion control and machine safety.

Attendees also had the opportunity to talk with the IAC team from their South African Division, Tiprow Controls.

Kymin Charity Tea Morning

Kymin Financial Planners hosted an event during 2017 on March 1st St David’s Day raising money for their local sponsored charity St David’s Hospice Care.

The “Big Welsh Brew” Event encouraged businesses to celebrate St David’s Day with an organised Tea / coffee and cake morning where people would pay an entry fee to attend and also contribute to a raffle to win prizes.

As you can see from the photos the event was very well attended and raised much needed funds for a worthy Newport based charity / Hospice.

Off the back of a previous assignment, I was recommended to and contacted by Ridgeway Bar & Kitchen to capture some photography of their kitchen, restaurant, food, preparation and people to compliment and be featured in some print and online promotions.

A fantastic venue producing some impressive food… these are a small selection of some of the photographs I captured.

Monmouthshire County Life - Ned Heywood Potter

Ned Heywood started producing ceramics in 1973. He trained as a designer and his work has always been characterised by precision and detail. For the last 20 years an increasing proportion of his production has been produced for major companies, corporations and civic societies.

He moved to Chepstow with his partner Annie, when she was appointed curator of Chepstow Museum, and set up his first workshop in 1983. He now works entirely to commission from a new workshop in a 220 (at least!) - year-old pub just down the road from the first workshop where he spent 30 productive years.

He has always been fascinated by history and has worked on museum exhibitions and co-written and produced several historical spectacular productions in Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey.

Disappointed by intrusive and easily vandalised interpretation signage, he realised there was great potential in the material he used daily, clay, for historic interpretation which was more sympathetic and robust. He has developed a unique range of skills and novel techniques for applying the full range of graphics to ceramics.

Ned Heywood has been deputy Mayor and Mayor of Chepstow and co-founded the Chepstow Festival in 1988, he was awarded an MBE for his services to the community in Chepstow in the Wye Valley in the Queen's New Year's Honours list 2014.

Blue Plaques

A blue plaque on the building immediately conveys that the building is important or someone very significant lived there.

Ned Heywood has been making heritage ceramics for 16 years and blue plaques for the past 10.

All are made from white stoneware clay fired to 1280°C giving very desirable properties:- harder than steel (cannot be scratched with steel tools), unaffected by all solvents and most acids, colourfast forever, frost-proof, rot-proof, rodent-proof and flame-proof. They can be expected to last for many hundreds of years without maintenance. These characteristics of ceramic materials are due to them being composed of metal oxides, they are not attacked by oxygen, the element that causes most materials to rust, fade or decay.

These properties, combined with the high skills of the British pottery industry, resulted in the Victorian's choice of ceramic for the first London blue plaque scheme over 140 years ago.

Although the ways Ned forms soft clay and creates precise lettering use innovative techniques,

the finished products are part of the very long tradition of using ceramics, one of mans oldest technologies, to inform the present about the past.

All of Ned's production is individually handmade by him and his assistant Julia Land.

I was commissioned back in 2011 to photograph Ned and his amazing ceramics within his workshop space for an editorial feature in Monmouthshire County Life magazine. As with a lot of these editorial pieces, the subject matter and individual behind the work were both fascinating to me.
